About this event
Tonight will be mainly focused on beginners, but more experienced turners will also find things of interest. The first platter I’ll turn will be a burnt-rim ash platter from beginning to end, including my preferred finishing application on something burnt. As part of the demo, I’ll be discussing various tools to use and why. Including tools, I recommend for beginners, and more advanced turners. I will demonstrate how to turn a proper recess for mounting the blank, how to turn an ogee on the black side of a platter, turn an aesthetically pleasing rim for the eye to follow into the center of the platter when finished, how to use a torch to burn the rim, and then how to hollow out the center of the platter to provide for a crisp clean transition from the burnt rim to a natural wood finish center.
For the second platter, which will mostly be already turned, I will demonstrate how to do a dyed rim showing the techniques used to overcome the bleeding effects of using an alcohol-based dye.
Lastly, if time permits, I’ll discuss the method I came up with for doing a faux marble rim finish.
